W32/Braid.A Worm

 Information about the W32/Braid.A worm:

W32/Braid.A is an email worm. This worm infects Windows systems. It also carries a variant of W32/Funlove virus. The worm uses its own SMTP engine to email itself to all email addresses found in the local system.

The worm infected email has the following characteristics:

From address;

Displays the name in which the infected sender's Windows copy is registered to.

Subject;

Displays the Company name in which the infected sender's Windows copy is registered to.

The body of the mail contains;

Hello,

Product Name:  Windows operating system's version details
Product Id:  Windows operating system's product key

Process List:  List of processes running in the infected system

Thank you.

The email carries an attachment called Readme.exe.

Upon execution of the infected attachment, it copies itself as Regedit.exe in the Windows System folder. This is to mislead the user, as there is already one more file with the same name under Windows folder. It modifies the registry at the following location to load itself during the next startup.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The worm drops two more files Msconfig.exe and Bride.exe, which are infected by a variant of W32/Funlove virus. The worm attempts to execute these files. It also copies Explorer.exe and help.eml in the Windows Desktop. Later on, using its own SMTP engine, it attempts to mail itself to all the email addresses found in the local system. The worm also attempts to delete Msconfig.exe file under Windows system folder.

This worm first appeared on 4th November 2002.
