W32/Klez.H Worm

 Information about the W32/Klez.H worm:

W32/Klez.H is an email worm. It is a variant of W32/Klez.E. This worm will infect Windows system. It also spreads over network shares.

The worm arrives with a random subject. The subject is a combination of words randomly chosen by the worm.

Content of the mail will be random text or blank. It carries an infected attachment with random filename with the following extensions .EXE, .PIF, .COM, .BAT, .SCR, .RAR. Upon execution of the attachment, it copies itself to Windows\System directory as Wink*.EXE. When the infected attachment is executed, the worm gets activated. It tries to propagate via open network shares and email. It modifies the registry at the following locations to run itself at the startup.

The registry key is created at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The worm drops files with the following extensions .EXE, .PIF, .COM, .BAT, .SCR, .RAR. It drops worm files with double extension filenames .EXE, .SCR, .PIF, .MP8, .BAT, .TXT, .HTM, .HTML, .WAB, .MPQ, .MPEG, .BAK, .DOC, .XLS, .CPP, .C, .PAS, .MP3. The worm collects email addresses from Windows address book as well as email addresses present in files of infected computer. After this, the worm tries to remove background processes of major antivirus software installed in infected computer.

The worm also carries a virus called W32/Elkern.C. It drops the infected file in a random name and executes it.

This worm first appeared on 17th April 2002.
