W32/Mydoom.B Worm

 Information about the W32/Mydoom.B Worm:

W32/Mydoom.B is a mass mailing worm. This worm is a variant of W32/Mydoom. The worm will infect Windows systems. The worm spreads through email and KaZaA P2P software.

The worm arrives with a random subject. The subject is a combination of words randomly chosen by the worm.

Content of the mail will be random text. It carries an infected attachment with a random filename having single or double extensions. Infected email carries a spoofed 'From' address picked up randomly from the infected system.

Upon execution of the attachment, it displays a dialog box with a message, "Not enough memory to load this file." and opens Windows NOTEPAD.EXE and displays some garbage. It copies a file explorer.exe to Windows system folder. The worm also copies itself as zapSetup_95_693, xsharez_scanner, winamp0, NessusScan_pro, MS59-56_hotfix, BlackIce_Firewall_Enterprise, attackXP-6.71 to Program Files\KaZaA\My Shared Folder. It drops a file called ctfmon.dll in the Windows System folder.

It alters the windows registry at the following location to load itself during next startup;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The worm alters the local host file in the infected computer and denies access to security update sites.
The worm also performs a DOS attack to the following sites;

www.sco.com
www.microsoft.com

The worm scans all the files present in the infected system having the following extensions and collects all the available email addresses.

.adb, .asp, .dbx, .htm, .php, .pl, .sht, .tbb, .txt, .wab

The worm uses its own SMTP engine to propagate itself to all these addresses.

This worm first appeared on 28th January 2004.
