 Information about the Plage2000 worm:

Plage2000 is an email worm. This worm affects Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT systems.

This worm is in Windows PE file format and it's size is 102,400 bytes. This worm spreads through email. Running an infected file installs the worm onto the system.

The worm performs the following actions.

It copies a file, INETD.EXE, to the Windows folder. It also modifies WIN.INI and registry to load itself, when Windows is next started up. After this it looks for MAPI compatible email software and checks for unanswered emails. It replies to all unanswered emails, making it seem like it is an actual response from the receiver. In the way it works, it is like the Zipped_files trojan.

Similar to the NewApt worm, infected mails carry an attachment with different names, like:

pics.exe, images.exe, joke.exe, docs.exe, SETUP.EXE, humor.exe, PsPGame.exe, news_doc.exe, tamagotxi.exe, searchURL.exe, Card.EXE, billgt.exe, midsong.exe, hamster.exe, s3msong.exe, fun.exe

Apart from the original contents of the mail, worm attaches the following message;

P2000 Mail auto-reply:

' I'll try to reply as soon as possible.
Take a look to the attachment and send me your opinion! '

This Plage2000 worm first appeared in January 2000.
