BAT/WCup Worm

 Information about the BAT/WCup worm:

BAT/WCup is an email worm. This worm will infect Windows systems. It spreads using the email addresses present in Microsoft Outlook address book and mIRC.

It arrives with the following subject:

WorldCup News!

The body of the mail contains:

read me for more world cup news!

This mail contains an attachment WorldCup.BAT.

Upon execution of infected attachment, it creates and randomly deletes the following files under Windows and Windows\System folders: Italy.bat, Worldcup_score.vbs, Argentina.bat, Worldcup.bat, Germany.bat, World_cup_.bat, China.bat, Russia.bat, Turkey.bat, Denmark.bat, Costarica.bat, Wini.bat, Spain.bat, Funny.bat, Japan.vbs, Brazil.vbs, England.vbs, Uraguay.vbs, Paraguay.vbs, Ireland.vbs, Dd.ini, Pif.lnk, Vbs.lnk, Eyeball.reg.

After this, it creates a folder under C: drive as ThisIsOnlyASimpleWorm. This folder will contain a dropped copy of the worm as WorldCup.BAT. Also, it overwrites .BAT files with its own code. It makes changes to WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files to propagate itself via mIRC network. The worm sends out its copy to all the contacts in Outlook address book.

The worm creates registry entries at the following location.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Finally, the worm deletes some antivirus software executable files.

This worm first appeared on 11th June 2002.
